Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Officers say they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a swastika, they reported.
Officers then found many other smeared cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police say preliminary tests suggest the liquid was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; officials are not yet aware of any injuries in association with the incident," they added.
Municipal representatives announced they were attempting "to resolve the case" and have appealed to the public for tips.
A senior official stated the incident left him stunned and needed to be addressed rapidly.
"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist attack five years ago," he posted on a platform, recalling the murder of nine victims by a assailant aiming at individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
