Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
