The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, aside from the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
