The Leading Album of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Takes the Number One Place.

On the surface, this album may look more like a challenging scholarly challenge rather than a new pop record from an artist who just had a previous single featured an international pop star. Broken across 4 different movements and sung in 13 tongues, it is a head-spinning symphonic work exploring feminine mystique, spiritual ascent, and bodily change, frequently via the lens of different women saints. The end of a relationship—a theme handled with raw openness elsewhere—soars upwards on this record, supported by the lush presence of a full symphony orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter within a vast list of contributors. The pure audacity by itself renders the efforts of other pop stars appear rather modest.

Transcending Academic Pretense

That Lux succeeds in avoid overly academic posturing is nothing short of miraculous, and complete credit going to Rosalía. While it's not her first album to blend the past and modern styles, its scale feel much higher on Lux, and the balancing act far more dramatic. What really elevates this fourth release, outside of its complex tunes, dense arrangements, and engrained theatricality, proves to be an essential sense of playfulness. Much like the iconic Björk during her height, you find a captivating quality to Rosalía's singing that pulls the listener into its tornado. When she is breaking hearts apart, the listener nevertheless want to stay right there for the journey.

A Signature Example of Joy

This playful energy shines brightly during the stirring piano-led song inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a sorrowful melancholy over several minutes. Then, everything drops silent, and there's a gleeful laugh and a declaration prior to a hilariously exaggerated orchestral crescendo crashes down like comedic impact. The song then segues into the wild track driven by galloping strings, an imposing choir, and a surprise role from the artist herself.

"The magic of Lux lies in you never quite know—or even want to know—where you will go to next."

Almost each song ends at a completely different place than where it began. One moment examines the transient nature of celebrity over a featherlight symphony only to collapsing in electronic cacophony. Another, a cut that recalls the artist's earlier trap-infused work begins out moody and sinister, with menacing beats, until sudden flamenco rhythms and an angelic chorus enter to smooth its jagged edges.

The Bridge Of Experiment and Pop

A key achievement on the album involves navigating the line of bold experimentation and mainstream appeal. This is no surprise that the album has achieved her highest-charting release to break into the Top 5 of major markets: at its core a collection of utterly catchy pop songs. A song sung primarily in English builds around a refrain that feels to collect more and more infectious hooks while it spins upward. This trick gets repeated by a different powerful track that expands and constricts, weaving multiple tunes as an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number charms via its jaunty, theatrical drama and a chant-along hook.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with pop culture impact of other heartbreak songs, lambasting a former lover described as an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals have a sharp edge, like a fairy-tale figure hiding a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You've the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

This album represents pop on a grand scale, a hungry reach for capital-A artistry in an era of looming artificial blankness. It eschews solipsism in favor of glorious elevation, crafting an over-the-top drama that masterfully controls its inherent ridiculousness. It is a deep source of buried treasure that takes patience to completely explore but never seem like a chore. Where other big releases of 2025 felt like a meager meal, Lux is a lavish feast where the characters around the table, some tipsy on sacred drink, flit between conversations about historical saints, the galvanizing feeling of heartbreaking grief, and common stories about hopeless partners. It is a contemporary theatrical production from pop's most endlessly inventive practitioner.
